Solar Eclipse and Pets

Are you concerned about your pets and the upcoming solar eclipse?

Kara M. Burns, MS, MEd, LVT, VTS (Nutrition), VTS-H (Internal Medicine, Dentistry), Academy of Veterinary Nutrition recommends that although the chances of pets looking directly at the sun are minimal, if you plan to bring your pets to eclipse viewings, it is better to use protective glasses to ensure their safety.

Other species may react in a variety of ways during the eclipse. Horses and goats may think the eclipse signals nightfall and head to the barn, and exotic species such as birds may also exhibit their typical evening rituals. Many nocturnal species may awaken, increasing the potential for pets to encounter wildlife.

Due to the stress of crouds, noise, the potential of eye damage and possible exposure to nocuturnal species…it is best to leave your furry friend at home!
